2007 Petite Sirah
This is the first, and certainly not last, release of our Santa Ynez Valley Petite Sirah. I LOVE this variety and feel that it is truly and underdog and underappreciated. For years, it has become synonymous with big, tannic monsters of wines that HAVE to be laid down for a decade or so in order to soften them enough to enjoy them without being ‘painful’ to drink.
We’re fortunate in the Santa Barbara County area to be able to produce Petite Sirahs that retain the boldness and color of what you’d expect in a Petite Sirah without the insurmountable wall of tannins normally associated with the variety. The grapes for this wine come from Rodney’s Vineyard in Los Olivos, a relatively ‘old vine’ block that was planted about 25 years ago. The cuttings for the vines came from the Palisades Vineyard up in Napa, a vineyard that dates back to the turn of last century.
Aged in neutral French oaks for 22 months, this wine is just now starting to strut its stuff after being in bottle for nearly two years. Though 50 cases were produced, I’m down to my last few – so if you’re intersted, I’d act sooner rather than later!
FWIW, this was a Gold Medal Winner at the SF Chronicel Wine Competition.
