2008 Camp 4 Mourvdre
2008 marks the third vintage of our 2008 Camp 4 Mourvedre, and probably my favorite to date at this stage in its life. The block of Mourvedre that we receive from Camp 4 was affected by the April frosts we saw in 2008, and therefore yields were quite low. We made only two barrels of Mourvedre – one that made its way into our 2008 Cuvee Christie and the other that we bottled for this release.
This wine has a wonderful clear dark ruby color, not unlike a medium colored Grenache. It features a nice combination of brambly dark red fruit, baking spices, black and white pepper, and a touch of the tell-tale earthiness that I really dig about this variety. It is a wine that will continue to take on more ‘character’ as it sits in bottle (if our 2006 is any indication – a very different wine than it was on release in 2008). It is medium-bodied with noticeable tannins and enough acidity to make this a very food-friendly wine.
